Quick answer
Choose Wix when the site is a brochure for people who already know you and you enjoy editing it. Choose a custom website when the site has to bring in customers: rank for your service and area, load fast on a phone, and answer quote requests within a minute. Wix publishes its plan prices; BuildSites builds custom sites for $297 USD a month with no upfront cost.
TorontoPlenty of businesses in North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, Downtown and the Beaches run on a Wix site that nobody finds. We replace those with built-for-you sites across Toronto, and we tell the ones who should stay on Wix to stay. We work with you by video and on site where it helps.
Wix vs a custom website: the short answer
Choose Wix if your website is a brochure: people already know you, they need your hours, your address and a photo or two, and you enjoy editing it yourself. Choose a custom website if the site has to bring in customers: rank for "your service + your area", load fast on a phone, take quote requests and answer them, and keep doing that without you touching it. The Wix vs custom website question is really a question about what job the site has.
We build the custom kind, so read the rest with that in mind. We also tell some businesses to stay on Wix, and we will say when below.
What you actually get with each
| Wix (or Squarespace, GoDaddy) | Custom website | |
|---|---|---|
| Who builds it | You, from a template, in evenings | Someone whose job it is, from a brief |
| Time to live | A weekend if you are decisive; months if you are not | With BuildSites, 48 hours once we have your logo and services |
| Design | Looks like the template and the thousands of other sites on it | Built around your trade, your photos and the one thing you want visitors to do |
| Speed on a phone | Depends on the template and what you add; builders carry extra code you cannot remove | Measured against Google's published targets before launch |
| Local search | Possible, but the service and area pages, titles and structured data are your job | One page per service and per area, structured data and a connected Google Business Profile from day one |
| Forms and follow-up | A form that emails you | A form that texts the visitor back within a minute and alerts you |
| Changes | You make them, when you have time | You send a text; it is usually live the same day |
| Ownership | The site lives inside the builder; leaving means rebuilding | Your domain, your content and your code; you can take them anywhere |
| Upfront cost | None, beyond your time | None with BuildSites; typically $2,500 to $8,000 with a Toronto agency |
| Monthly cost | Wix publishes its current plan prices at wix.com/plans; the business tiers are the ones with a connected domain and no Wix ads | $297 USD a month plus taxes with BuildSites, hosting, monitoring, updates, backups and edits included |
When Wix is the right call
Be honest about three things. If all three are true, stay on Wix and spend the money on your Google Business Profile instead.
- Your customers already know you. Referrals, repeat clients, a storefront with foot traffic. The site confirms you are real; it does not have to find anyone.
- You like editing it. Some owners do. If updating the gallery on a Sunday night is a pleasure and not a chore, a builder gives you that control.
- You do not take enquiries through the site. If the phone and walk-ins are the whole business, the form's reply time does not matter.
A barber with a full chair and a booking app, a café, a consultant who gets every client from referrals. Wix is fine. We have told each of those to keep what they have.
When Wix is costing you money
The moment the site is supposed to generate work, the trade-offs flip.
Speed. Google's 2016 research found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes more than three seconds to show (Think with Google). Builder templates ship with scripts you cannot see or remove, and every app you add from the marketplace adds more. Run your site through Google's PageSpeed Insights on mobile; the number you get is the number your customers get.
Local search. Ranking for "plumber Etobicoke" or "plancher Laval" takes a page for that service and a page for that area, each with its own title, description and structured data, and all of it kept consistent with your Google Business Profile. A builder lets you make those pages. It does not make them, and most owners never do. That is the gap we see most often when a Wix site gets no calls; our post on why a website isn't getting calls has the 60-second check.
Follow-up. A builder form emails you. If you are on a job site, that email waits. A custom build can text the visitor back within a minute, confirm what they asked for and offer a time to talk, then alert you. For a service business, that single difference is worth more than the design.
Your time. The "free" plan costs evenings. Count them. A site that takes you forty hours to build and ten a year to maintain is not free; it is paid in the hours you were not quoting jobs.
What a custom website should cost in 2026
Two models exist. Agencies in Toronto typically charge $2,500 to $8,000 upfront for a small business site, then $100 to $300 a month for hosting and maintenance; our website cost breakdown goes through what sits inside those numbers. The other model is monthly with no build fee. BuildSites charges $297 USD a month plus taxes on a 12-month term for up to eight pages, live in 48 hours, with hosting, monitoring every minute, security updates within 24 hours, nightly backups and edits included. After the term it runs month to month at the same price, and you own the domain, the content and the code.
Compare the first-year total, not the sticker. A builder plan plus your hours, versus an agency build plus hosting, versus a flat monthly. Then ask which of the three will actually be found, load fast, and answer its own form.
Five questions to settle it
If the table above did not decide it, these will. Answer honestly; nobody is grading.
- Where did your last ten customers come from? If the answer is referrals and repeat business, the site is a brochure. If it is "they found us on Google", the site is a sales tool and needs building like one.
- When did you last change the site? If you cannot remember, you are not using the one advantage a builder offers, which is that you can.
- What happens in the first minute after someone fills in your form? If the answer is "it emails me", you are losing the evening enquiries whatever platform you are on.
- How does the site look on your own phone, on mobile data, right now? Not from memory. Open it.
- Who fixes it when it breaks? Builders rarely break, which is a real point in their favour. Custom sites need someone on the hook for updates and monitoring; with BuildSites that is included, and with an agency it is the line item after the build.
Three or more answers pointing at "the site has to find and convert people" means the custom side. Otherwise stay put, and put the money into reviews and your profile.
Moving off Wix without losing your rankings
If you do move, keep every address that Google already knows. Each old page should point to its new equivalent with a permanent redirect, the new site should go live with the same domain, and Search Console should see the change. Google documents the process in its guide to site moves with URL changes. Skipping the redirects is the one mistake that turns a better website into a traffic drop. Our website redesign checklist has the full pre-launch list.

Questions we get asked
Is Wix good enough for a small business website?
Yes, when the site is a brochure for people who already know you and you are happy editing it. It is not enough when the site has to rank locally, load fast on phones and answer quote requests.
Is a custom website better for SEO than Wix?
A custom build is normally faster and arrives with the service pages, area pages and structured data that local ranking needs. Wix can rank; the difference is that someone has to do that work, and on a builder it is usually nobody.
How much does a custom website cost compared to Wix?
Wix publishes its plan prices at wix.com/plans. A Toronto agency typically charges $2,500 to $8,000 upfront plus monthly hosting. BuildSites is $297 USD a month plus taxes with no upfront build cost, maintenance included.
Can I move my Wix site to a custom website without losing Google rankings?
Yes, if every old page redirects permanently to its new equivalent on the same domain and Search Console is updated. Google publishes the steps in its site-move documentation.
Do I own a custom website?
With BuildSites, yes: the domain, the content and the code are yours, and you can take them elsewhere. A Wix site lives inside Wix; leaving means rebuilding.
How long does a custom website take to build?
Agencies usually quote weeks to months. BuildSites puts a site of up to eight pages live in 48 hours once it has your logo and services.
